Recommendations
- All schools are circulated with information about setting up a young carers register (using Surrey Young Carers template).
- All schools are asked to amend their admission forms, where necessary, to include questions on illness/disability and caring role within the family.
- All schools are asked to amend their bullying policy to include a specific mention about young carers.
- All schools to identify a designated Link Worker for young carers.
- Young carer training for all staff is embedded in annual inset days and opportunities made available to complete E Learning programme. Staff to accept Surrey Young Carers training support offer to individual schools.
- All schools should include disability, illness and Young Carers in their PSHE curriculum.
- A statement of support for young carers to be included in the Home School Agreement.
- Schools to promote young carers support with regular newsletter articles, on the school website, in parent mail, Home School Agreement and to display posters and leaflets in the reception area.
- Schools to create a young carer policy. It should include identification, support and steps taken to communicate with parents/guardians who face barriers to attending parents evenings or reading mail. How young carers will be flexibly support around detentions, homework and accessing phones during school hours.
- Consult with young carers to establish what support they want from their school i.e. school groups, time out cards etc.
- Young carers to be included on the Common Transfer file and schools to share information specific to their caring role.
- Individual young carers Support Plans are created between schools and families
