View access permissions for Joomla! K2 items

As much as we love using K2 for Joomla! - the CCK like extension that does much of what Joomlas core content should be doing - it does have its draw backs. Namely access permissions. You can setup groups for editing and publishing but not for viewing. Darn. We've been scratching an itch here for a client and got a working solution.

The idea is that we want to be able to give certain groups more fine grained permissions over the types of content contained within a K2 article. For example we might want to restrict;

  • K2 fulltext
  • Gallery
  • Video
  • Attachment

Turns out its quite straightforward to do except where you try to restrict access to a category and its complete children. Trying to run through the K2 category tree is too intensive to recursively check permissions in the way we intially started. So we gave up! Well actually ran out of time. But we have a per category solution working so that will suffice for now.

Here is a screen shot of an items view settings:

We should have a package available here for playing with soon.
